Easter Project 2010

Its that time of year again folks. The 2010 Easter 5s event will be held next month at Leith Community Education Centre and agencies directly involved with the Leith Youth Workers Forum are invited to participate. Unfortunately, due to a lack of external funds this year, the event will be ‘streamlined’ with some cut-backs being implemented. However, we’ve come up with an event that the young people of Leith will still enjoy. Dates for the event are:-

Tuesday 13th  April at LCEC -        1.30pm – 3.30pm Boys aged 9 – 13 years

Wednesday 14th  April at LCEC   1.30pm – 3.30pm Girls aged 9- 16  years

Thursday 15th  April at LCEC        1.30pm – 3.30pm Boys aged 14 – 16 Years

Teams  limited to 7 players are invited to enrol. In the interests of safety and to ensure the smooth running of the event we’d advise that only teams enrolling through official LYWF agencies can be accepted as youth leaders will be required to be in attendance in order to supervise your group(s). Parental consent forms will be the sole responsibility of each individual youth agency.

The deadline for enrolment is Monday 12th April 2010 and this can be processed by contacting me either at the Pilmeny Youth Centre – 0131 554 0953 or by mobile. Alternatively, contact Callum Gibson at LCEC.  If groups can’t make the event, please let us know.

Pilmeny Youth Centre, Redpath Albion/Pilmeny Sports Club along with Partners, Citadel Youth Centre, Leith Community Learning and Development Team,
Leith Youth Workers Forum and Leith Police NAU will facilitate this years SRTRC Event at Leith Community Education Centre. Invitations are extended to all Leith Youth Agencies
working with young people

Friends of Dalmeny Park

Friends of Dalmeny Street Park organised a festival of fun for the local community held on Saturday 31 May 11am - 4pm

Local Partner Agencies included Leith Festival, Out of the Blue, Pilmeny Youth Centre, Redpath Albion /Pilmeny Sports Club. Lothian and Borders Police Neighbourhood Action Unit and Lorne Primary School. Event sponsors include,  Scottish Natural Heritage. Child Poverty 'Dare to Care' Campaign, Leith Central Community Council, Braid Vets and the Vittoria Restaurant

City of Edinburgh Council this quarter rubberstamped a £120,000 revamp of Dalmeny Street Park after more than 500 people flocked to a community festival organised by Friends of Dalmeny Street Park (FDSP). Visitors to Parklife’s third annual gala weekend on May 31st and June 1st at the park – a centrepiece of this year’s Leith Festival – gave an overwhelmingly positive response when canvassed about the proposed improvements. “It was like old times at Dalmeny Park with large numbers of the community having their memories rekindled of how it used to be. The FDSP vision is now becoming clearer after the success of the festival. The potential to grow the FDSP Festival is huge and could easily become a vital annual community gathering looked forward to by many,” confirms Pilmeny Youth Centre Manager and FDSP committee member Bryan Maughan. Now city planners are sitting up and taking notice of plans to overhaul the ageing sports and play facilities. In the wake of the successful gala weekend, a June 20th council meeting gave the greenlight to a £50,000 upgrade to sports facilities in the park. That’s on top of £70,000 already earmarked for a new children’s play area. Last year, the Parklife project won £30,000 worth of council improvements to the park.

The event featured gardening, a basketball tournament, five-a-side football competition, poets’ corner, live music, sculpture and a dog show in a bid to raise the profile of the project which aims to regenerate this previously neglected public greenspace. Membership of FDSP rocketed to over 100 after the festival. FDSP Treasurer Lise Bratton comments, “Having done the last two annual events, I’m blown away by the increased numbers participating and developing new initiatives.”
