About the Pilmeny Youth Centre

A bit of info about Pilmeny......

Situated in the Lorne area of Leith, Edinburgh, the Pilmeny Youth Centre provides social, educational and recreational activities for local children and young people aged from toddler to 19yrs.

Member groups are staffed by a team of part-time youth workers, provided by the Pilmeny Development Project via City of Edinburgh Council, Children and Families Services, as well as independantly funded youth staff. The building is leased from our local Pilrig St Paul's Church, who were the previous owners of the adjoining building. The centre was the old church social hall until 1984 when the local Pilmeny Development Project, based not 200 metres from our front door, took up the fight with the then Lothian Regional Council, to lobby for a total re-furbishment of the building. It took five long years before the council listened to the needs of the community and funding was provided in 1989 to transform the centre into the facility it is today.

At the time of the refurbishment the centre only had one user group brave enough to use the crumbling facility. After 12 months of stripping the building back to its shell and rebuilding to its present standard, we opened our doors to the local community in November 1990 and have went from strength to strength since that date.

The centre is supported by a staff team of Four (4). Our full time Manager is assisted by two (2) part-time staff members, book-keeper and cleaner, and also a weekend session worker. The centre manager has responsibility for the day - to - day management of the centre and its budget and main activity programme

The wider issue's concerning the centre is entrusted to the voluntary Board of Directors. The centre is part funded by the City of Edinburgh Council, with full salary provision for the centre manager. Part-time staff costs are met by 50% of the CEC Annual Revenue Grant. However, the remainder of staff salaries and utility and servicing costs has to be met from fundraising activities and from lease/hire of the facilities to local groups and organisations.
